| What is NHS? |
NHS is the National Health Service of the U.K. , which was set up on July 5th , 1948 to provide health care for all citizens based on need, not the ability to pay. The NHS is funded by the taxpayer and managed by the Department of Health, which sets overall policies on health issues. It is the responsibility of the Department of Health to provide health services to the general public through the NHS.
NHS was launched as a single organisation with around 14 regional hospital boards. NHS was originally divided into three categories on the basis of the nature of health care services:
Hospital services |
Family doctors, dentists, opticians and pharmacists |
Local authority health services, including community nursing and health visiting |
Since 1948, there have been huge changes to both the organisational structure of the NHS and the way patient services are provided.

| What is NMC? |
NMC is the Nursing and Midwifery Council. It is an organisation set up by the U.K. Parliament to ensure nurses and midwives provide high standards of care to their patients and clients.
To achieve its aims, the NMC: |
Maintains a record of qualified nurses, midwives, and specialist community public health nurses |
Sets standards for education, practice, and conduct |
Provides professional advice for nurses and midwives |
Considers allegations of misconduct or unfitness to practise due to ill health |
Since the NMC maintains a live record of nurses, midwives, and specialist community public health nurses, all overseas-trained nurses must register with the NMC in order to be able to practise in the U.K. The NMC reserves the right to remove or caution any practitioner who is found guilty of professional misconduct. In rare cases (for example, practitioners charged with serious crimes), it can also suspend a registrant while the case is under investigation. |
